Adult clients

Behaviour Support and Therapy has extensive experience and expertise of working with adults living physical, developmental and neurological disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well as psychosocial disability. We believe that fulfillment comes from feeling a sense of mastery over our lives and feeling supported to live the way we want.

We can support you to:

  • Make friends

We often help our clients to feel connected by participating in the community, socialising and making friends. This can involve helping them manage their behaviours, to lead an active social life, and enhance their ability to communicate their needs so that others can understand.

  • Develop new skills

We work with our clients towards developing new skills that can expand their horizons and open up the world to them. We assist adult clients to learn to better understand and manage their behaviour, and offer one-on-one counselling and therapy to support meaningful change.

  • Self-manage

We work with our clients to build independence in everyday life. We support our clients to move around without physical or emotional barriers. We also help them be able perform activities of daily living (like dressing, cooking, cleaning, moving around the community, accessing medical care or healthcare).

  • Problem solve

Having choice and control and the ability to make decisions is important to everyone. By developing functional capacity, clients can break down problems and make informed decisions based on experience, advice and available resources.

How we can assist you

We can help our adult clients with:

  • A Support Coordinator who can assist you to navigate the NDIS and link you in with providers who can help you meet your NDIS goals. Support Coordinators also develop Funding Plans and Support Plans. Funding plans assist with managing NDIS funds. A Support Plan is like a directory of different services, providers, resources and strategies to help you meet your needs and goals.
  • Therapy and Counselling to identify your strengths and needs and work towards your NDIS goals, by building your capacity to be independent and carry out activities of daily living.
  • Behaviour Support by working with you to identify your strengths and the areas you want to change in your life. We bring together all your therapists and support people to work towards a plan which is focused on your goals and understanding who you are. We can develop a Positive Behaviour Support Plan that can used to guide people around you to understand your triggers, cues and reasons for certain behaviours. We can train your support people to understand the Positive Behaviour Support Plan and be able to implement it.

How our sessions can look

We can work with you:

  • In your workplace

We are happy to come and work with you in your workplace with your work colleagues, work friends and support people. We can train people in your Positive Behaviour Support Plan and act as your voice when you feel unable to express your needs.

  • With your family and friends

We can work with you and your family and friends. This can look like group sessions (with peers or family etc), couple sessions (with a parent, loved one or spouse etc) and sessions with support people (mentors, support workers, carers, support coordinators etc). These sessions can be focused on building relationships, maintaining relationships and understanding the needs of each other. We can also support you to set boundaries and expectations with your loved ones and friends.

  • In clinic

Most sessions are in a private therapeutic space. You can bring a support person if you are nervous at meeting new people or going to new places.  This time is designed for you to identify, explore and understand yourself, your behaviours and your ways of coping.

  • In your community

We will support you to engage in your community. This often means working with you in your social settings (groups, social clubs, sporting clubs, day options etc).
